Sewelo:

Louis Vuitton's New Treasure

24th January 2020

Have you already seen a rough diamond as big as a tennis ball?

Probably not since there is only one stone that can pretend to that size and it is Louis Vuitton that gets the pride to show it off. The French luxury fashion house just unveiled its incredible purchase of the Sewelo, meaning “Rare find” in tswaga, the language of Botswana where the diamond was discovered. Botswana presents important mining areas where considerable high quality diamonds are sourced, such as the Okavango Blue Diamond and Lesedi La Rona diamond (the latter is currently owned by Graff Diamonds).

This new impressive 1’758 carat stone is the world second biggest rough diamond ever discovered, after the famous Cullinan diamond, which composes part of the Crown Jewels.

The Sewelo was actually unearthed in April 2019 by Lucara’s Karowe Mining company.

Today, the diamond is still untouched, which explained its dark color, and is currently presented to the luckiest customers of Louis Vuitton. We look forward to seeing what the emerging high jewellery brand will make it out of it!

Louis Vuitton integrated the high jewellery sector in 2009, when unveiling its very first collection of precious jewels. Perfectly consistent with its brand identity and fashion collections, the creations take inspiration from the codes of the French Maison: the letter V and the monograms, star and flower. These icons are subtly composing the large pendants, voluminous rings and architectural earrings, that instantly identify Louis Vuitton.

In 2019, Francesca Amfitheatrof leaves Tiffany & Co to become the new Jewelry & Watches Artistic Director of Louis Vuitton. Unveiled in July 2019, her first collection, Riders of the Knights, was strong in medieval symbols aiming to empower the most daring women in the world. Its major presence in Place Vendome, Paris, establishes the fashion brand as a serious and growing high jewelry competitor, facing Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels. With only 11 years of high-end jewelry creativity, Louis Vuitton is already imposing its style in the very exclusive and limited sparkling market.
